Commissioning and Measurement &Verification
M&V is the process of measuring and verifying that energy goals for specific projects have been attained. It has become “business as usual” and is frequently required by contract for many utility-sponsored conservation programs and energy performance contracts.
For optimal project outcomes, it appears that the commissioning, measurement, and verification processes should work in tandem. For M&V to serve as a confirmation that energy goals are met, it would be prudent to commission the systems as part of their design and construction. Commissioning contributes to the M&V process by confirming not only that systems physically function properly at the conclusion of construction but also that they will continue to function efficiently throughout their lifetimes.
The training on Commissioning and Measurement and Verification was developed by an experienced commissioning expert, Krishnaji Pawar, who specializes in developing sustainable design strategies for Green Building Certification Systems (LEED, GSAS, etc.), Energy and Water Conservation, Commissioning, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Environmental Management Systems.
Measurement and verification (M&V) is the next-to-last step in the technical commissioning process, which is covered in this course. M&V involves utilizing industry-standard tools and processes to check and ensure that occupied facilities (whether a single building or a group of structures) perform at the owner’s desired level of resource efficiency, and to determine what steps can be taken if the desired level has not been reached.
The Commissioning and Measurement and Verification training program will provide you with the utility strategies, commissioning In ESPC, and integrating the energy savings verification process necessary to develop your skills if you are interested in expanding your knowledge of the commissioning and M&V processes.
This introductory course will use scenarios to demonstrate the similarities and differences between Commissioning and Measurement & Verification (M&V), as well as how the two services can be integrated on projects to maximize building performance. Specific instances will illustrate the application of learning objectives to both new construction and existing building applications.
A building is designed, constructed, and commissioned in accordance with the OPR in the best-case scenario. The owner then takes possession of the building, uses it as it was intended to be used, and enjoys a structure whose performance falls within a range of acceptable OPR parameters. In this situation, the M&V process is little more than an academic exercise that measures and verifies the expected outcome of a successful commissioning process.
Participants will be able to better coordinate Commissioning activities and meet owner expectations for projects with energy performance project requirements as a result of this lesson.
