Changes in temperatures and weather patterns that last for a long time are called “climate change.” These changes could be natural, like when the sun’s cycle changes. But humans have been the main cause of climate change since the 1800s. This is mostly because they burn fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.
Greenhouse gas emissions are made when fossil fuels are burned. These gases act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the heat from the sun and making temperatures rise.
Carbon dioxide and methane are two types of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. These are caused by things like using gasoline to drive a car or coal to heat a building. Carbon dioxide can also be made when land and forests are cleared. Most of the methane that gets into the air comes from garbage dumps. The biggest sources of pollution are energy, industry, transportation, buildings, agriculture, and land use.
